In Palestine as in Lebanon:
PENGON urges the UN Security Council to adopt resolution to stop Israeli aggression
PENGON, August 27, 2006
Jerusalem – Ramallah: At its meeting in Ramallah on 17-08-2006 the General Assembly of the Palestinian Environmental Non-Governmental Organization Network ((PENGON)) urged the UN General Secretary and the members of the UN Security Council to bring to attention again the war on Gaza and to issue a clear call for an end to Israeli aggression. The contradiction between the adoption of UN SC resolution no.1701 that has ended the Israeli war on Lebanon and the Council’s silence on Gaza undermines the credibility of the UN.
As the world’s eyes were fixed on developments in Lebanon, the Israeli military machine, with its tanks and aircraft, has continued to attack Gaza by targeting civilians, residential buildings and damaging infrastructure that provide for Palestinians’ basic human needs. A sharp deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has been reported as a consequence of the destruction of facilities that supply water and electricity to its residents.
Since the beginning of the military operation dubbed “Summer Rains”, tens of greenhouses have been destroyed and thousands of dunums (1 dunum = 1000 m2) of land and trees have been razed and uprooted. Many innocent civilians among them women and children – sometimes numerous members of the same family - have been killed and injured during the course of this operation which continues unabated.
We urge the UN and its Secretary General to act according to their responsibility and to prevent further loss of innocent lives and damage to the environment:
The members of the Security Council are asked to adopt, forthwith, a resolution that calls for an immediate and full cessation of the current Israeli invasion and destruction of Gaza.
