Last week in Palestine
3 August 2002
Whether there was or was not an agreement between the Palestinian Authority
and Israeli officials was irrelevant to the happenings of this past week in
the West Bank/Gaza Strip. The Israeli assault on Palestinians continued with
most of the towns and villages under Israeli military control, and movement
between the areas impossible, or severely restricted.
The humanitarian crisis that is being created by the draconian closure,
curfew and reoccupation of towns and cities is further exacerbated.
Recently released results of a Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics
survey on nutrition found:
- 63.8% of those surveyed have faced difficulties in food supply during the
intifada.
- 45.5% of children are suffering from chronic malnutrition, 36.3% from mild
chronic malnutrition.
- More than one third of households are unable to access health services due
to closure, curfew or lack of resources.
The Israeli policy of extra judicial executions has this week been practised
in full force with the killing of nine Palestinians, four of whom were not
‘targets’ – but were killed anyway.
The Israeli destruction of Palestinian property also continued this week
with families being made homeless in Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus and the Gaza
Strip.
Palestinians killed this week: 16
Total number of Palestinians killed: 1820 (provisionally)
Total number of Palestinians injured estimated at more than 40,00
